SAFETY GUIDELINES
Common sense and attentive parenting help to keep everyone safe. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the children present to insure they are accounted for and acting in a safe manner at all times. This means that you must not be distracted by the use of your cell phone. Taking pictures is fine, but please remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Please refrain from other phone activities while participating at the Homestead so your full attention is on keeping you, your children, and others around you as safe as possible. It may be tempting to squat down to get the best pic. Do so at your own risk.
Our animals have horns, teeth, tusks, spurs, beaks, claws, hooves, etc. Some of our animals are quite a bit larger than even an adult human. They also poop and pee. A lot! All of these things can be dangerous. Please listen to any and all instruction regarding safety and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Please do not eat or place your hands (or feet) in your mouth, nose, eyes or ears during or after having been around the animals and their surroundings until you can wash your hands properly.
Please do not feed the animals outside "treats" of any kind. Doing so may cause the animal to become sick or even die. If approved food/treats are available to give the animals, please be aware that hand feeding animals may result in getting bitten or even run over/stepped on. Do not keep treats in your pockets!
There may be structures and/or equipment that are unsafe and/or unsecure. Please insure you and your children refrain from running toward or climbing into, onto, around or near any such things.
Aside from the above mentioned, this is an outside activity, and there are lots of creatures in the outside. You may come across snakes, spiders, mosquitoes, etc. Plan and dress accordingly, but please refrain from using products containing Deet or other harmful chemicals around the Homestead. As mentioned, there will be animal feces, as well as mud and possibly other gross things. Dress appropriately, including closed-toe shoes. You may wish to bring a change of clothes/shoes with you, just in case you get "extra loved" by a slobbery animal.
